Ukraine’s Hit Reality TV Show Inspires Millions With Grassroots Power

More than 15 million Ukrainians tuned in to a reality TV show designed to popularize the power of local self-governance to transform their towns and villages. Five communities competed to create projects for grassroots change, in slick episodes of Hromada for a Million that aired from January to March. The hromada (community) prize: an investment of 1 million Ukraine hyrvnia, about $35,000. The big idea: advance Ukraine’s decentralization reforms with a riveting story line, heart and hope.
